Transports : La location de voitures est la solution la plus facile pour les voyageurs indépendants qui souhaitent visiter le pays . La plupart des routes sont bonnes. Les transports en commun (chicken bus et autres) permettent de voyager à travers tout le pays. Les principales agences de voyage ont des minibus et des autocars très confortables pour les touristes..

Où loger : Le Guatemala offre un large choix d’hôtels, des hôtels de luxe appartenant aux chaînes internationales, logement chez l’habitant, logement dans des ranches, campings etc..

Religion : La religion principale est le catholicisme, mais l’évangélisme devient important. Quelques communautés indiennes pratiquent une religion qui combine les rites précolombiens et le christianisme.

Géographie : Près de 110’000 km2 de superficie, traversé par 2 chaînes de montagnes, baigné par plusieurs fleuves et surtout couvert par des forêts tropicales et de nombreux lacs. Particulier : plus de 30 volcans dont certains en activité.

La monnaie : La monnaie officielle est le « Quetzal ».

Réserves naturelles : Le Guatemala offre une des plus grandes réserves biologiques du monde. Il a plus de 40 réserves naturelles et presque le double sont à l’étude. Le pays possède 3 lieux déclarés «patrimoine de l’humanité» par l’UNESCO. La ville d’Antigua, les sites de Quirigua et de Tikal. Le site de Tikal est unique au monde car il a été déclaré «réserve naturelle du monde ».

Vos déplacements : Le Guatemala est un petit pays, mais il est parfois difficile d’accéder à certains endroits. Mis à part les vols vers Tikal, il n’y a pas de liaison aérienne commerciale entre les villes du Guatemala.(contrairement au Panama qui comporte de nombreux choix). Néanmoins, il est possible de se déplacer en petit avion privé ou en hélicoptère.

Taxi : Disponible dans la plupart des grandes villes. Il faut évidemment négocier le prix de la course avec le chauffeur avant. Certains trajets sont à tarif fixe, ex. de l’aéroport au centre-ville.

Location de voiture : La voiture constitue le moyen de transport le plus efficace pour visiter le Guatemala. Mieux vaut ne pas circuler après la tombée du jour. De nombreux postes d’essence bordent les routes principales surtout.La circulation dans la Ciudad Guatemala est dense et même risquée et, aux heures de pointe, ressemble, à peu de choses près, à celle de toutes les grandes villes du monde. Par contre, en dehors de cette ville, les routes principales sont bien entretenues et la circulation y est fluide la plupart du temps. Plusieurs routes secondaires sont goudronnées, entre autres celles qui mènent à Comalapa, Mixco Viejo (au nord de la capitale) et Abaj Takalik (sur la côte du Pacifique). Les ponts détruits par l’ouragan Mitch (1998) ont été réparés, et la route entre Rio Dulce et Flores est pratiquable. L’autoroute à péage Ciudad de Guatemala-Palin Escuintla (vers la côte du Pacifique) est ouverte. Toutes personnes qui conduit une voiture immatriculée à l’extérieur du Guatemala doit posséder une assurance responsabilité civile et souvent l’autorisation du loueur.. Pour louer une voiture au Guatemala, il faut avoir 25 ans (selon compagnie), un permis de conduire ainsi qu’une carte de crédit. Certaines firmes ont des succursales à l’aéroport, dans la capitale, à Antigua, Quetzaltenango, Coban etc. On peut louer à un endroit et laisser la voiture à un autre moyennant des frais supplémentaires. Il faut toujours négocier les prix et bien relire pour le fonctionnement de l’assurance (de 40 usd à 100usd par/jour). Les assurances ne couvrent pas les frais en cas de collisions ou de vols, et l’on exige une franchise de US$ 500 ou 1’000 à US$ 1’500 en cas de sinistre.

Moto : On peut louer des motos dans la Ciudad de Guatemala, où le choix est plus grand, et à Antigua. Les conditions de la location de motos suivent de près les exigences qui s’appliquent à la location de voitures.

Vélo : On peut aussi louer une bicyclette ou un vélo de montagne à la journée, à la semaine ou au mois dans les grandes villes.

Autocar : Les autocars de nombreuses compagnies de transport sillonnent toutes les routes du Guatemala et c’est le moyen le plus économiques. pour . La Ciudad de Guatemala est la plaque tournante de toutes les routes menant même d’un pays à un autres en Amérique Centrale et la plupart des villages sont reliés à la capitale. Les autocars sont aussi disponible (des 1ers et 2 ème classe) Les camionetas sont des autobus scolaires importés des Etats-Unis et connus par les touristes étrangers sous l’appellation de «chicken-bus». Elles vont presque partout (remplie de locaux, animaux, parfois des touristes etc.). Départ dans la Ciudad de Guatemala : habituellement à la gare d’autocars de la zone 4, contigu au marché municipal. Plus près du centre historique, à la gare de la zone 1 (angle 9a. Avenida et 19 Callle) est point de départ de plusieurs autocars de 2 e classe («chicken-bus»). Les autocars de 1 re classe, plus confortable et près du double de prix (appelé pullmans) se distinguent par le nombre de passagers et le temps de parcours ; aussi les arrêts sont moins fréquents.

Minibus : Plusieurs agences de voyages font la navette pour la plupart des lieux touristiques à un coût plus élevé que celui des autocars. Le coût du trajet (taxi-bus de groupe) entre l’aéroport La Aurora et la ville d’Antigua varie (env.US$10 la course ou en taxis privé=25 usd

Premiers Secours

Il est essentiel pour chaque voyageur de prendre avec lui une trousse de premier secours contenant des médicaments de base.

Il est aussi très important de connaître le numéro de téléphone local des services médicaux d’urgence.

Chaque voyageur a la possibilité de suivre un cours de formation avec notre organisation (ou avec un autre centre à l’étranger pour lequel nous nous faisons un plaisir de vous fournir leur adresse)  afin que vous puissiez vous familiariser avec les premiers secours de base.

La capacité de répondre rapidement et efficacement, afin de prévenir toute détérioration lors d’un incident ou accident,  est très importante, en particulier dans les pays en voie de développement.

Le programme de formation que nous offrons inclut l’intervention aux premiers soins en cas d’urgence ou fournisseur d’oxygène DAN.

Ces cours de formation sont destinés à tout le monde.

L’ objectif de DAN (Diving Alert Network) est de fournir des statistiques d’incidents dans l’eau (incidents de plongée) et des conseils médicaux. Ils diffusent les informations les plus récentes et ils organisent des séminaires.
